1. Acceptance of Terms & Eligibility
By downloading, installing, or using the Comprehenza iOS application ("App"), the parent or legal guardian ("you") agrees to be legally bound by these Terms of Service ("Terms") on behalf of themselves and the child user. Comprehenza is designed for students in Grades 6 to 9. If you do not agree to these Terms, you must not create an account or allow the child to use the App.
In accordance with Apple App Store Guidelines (Section 1.3 for Kids Category apps), an adult — specifically a parent or legal guardian — must complete the account registration process, agree to these Terms, and authorise all use by the child. The child's direct interaction with legal agreements, external links, or any consent mechanisms is protected by our Parental Gate system.
2. Description of the Comprehenza Service
Comprehenza is a structured, interactive educational iOS application focused on developing reading literacy and comprehension skills. The service comprises four primary modules, each grounded in established educational research:
- The Library: A curated collection of reading passages dynamically calibrated to a child's selected grade level using the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level scale. Passages span a variety of genres including informational texts, narratives, and expository writing to develop a broad reading vocabulary.
- The Learning Journey: A structured daily progression system guiding students through exercises in four core literacy skill areas: Fluency (reading speed and accuracy), Vocabulary (word meaning and usage), Comprehension (understanding and inference), and Retelling (summarization and recall). This four-pillar approach is aligned with frameworks such as the National Reading Panel's key components of reading instruction.
- The Comprehenza Quotient (CQ): A proprietary, holistic scoring system that provides a single, easily understood metric for a child's reading skill development. The CQ progresses through clearly defined levels — from Novice to Expert — giving children and parents a tangible representation of growth over time. The CQ is calculated from performance across all four Journey modules.
- ReadBuddy: An AI-powered reading companion that children can consult while working through passages. ReadBuddy can explain complex vocabulary in simple, grade-appropriate language, provide context clues for ambiguous sentences, and help children understand narrative structures such as plot, character motivation, and theme. All ReadBuddy content is filtered through our Toxicity Guard and calibrated to appropriate Flesch-Kincaid readability levels.
3. Our AI: Research-Grounded Content Generation
Comprehenza integrates generative artificial intelligence to power dynamic, personalized learning experiences. We are transparent about this integration and the standards that govern it:
- Flesch-Kincaid Calibration: Every piece of AI-generated or AI-curated content — including reading passages, comprehension questions, vocabulary definitions, and ReadBuddy responses — must conform to the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level appropriate for the child's selected grade. This is a hard technical requirement, not a guideline. A Grade 6 selection delivers content calibrated to approximately Grade 6 level; a Grade 9 selection delivers content calibrated to approximately Grade 9 level. Users who have not made a grade selection receive appropriate default content.
- Research-Backed Approach: Our pedagogical philosophy draws from peer-reviewed literacy research, including the seminal work of Jeanne Chall on reading stages, the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) reports on reading development, and vocabulary acquisition research by Beck, McKeown, and Kucan (Tiers 1, 2, and 3 vocabulary). The AI does not generate arbitrary content; it generates content within a carefully designed educational framework.
- Continuous Safety Review: The output of AI models is subject to both automated safety filtering (the Toxicity Guard) and ongoing human review by our team to ensure content quality and safety standards are maintained. We are committed to updating our safety systems as AI technology and best practices evolve.
- No Guarantee of Specific Outcomes: While our content is grounded in research, Comprehenza does not and cannot guarantee specific academic improvements, test score increases, or grade advancements. Reading development is a complex process influenced by many factors beyond any single application.
4. Account Registration and Parental Responsibility
To use Comprehenza, a parent or legal guardian must create an account using a valid email address. By creating an account, the parent/guardian:
- Confirms they are the parent or legal guardian of the child who will use the App.
- Confirms the child is a student in Grades 6 to 9.
- Agrees to these Terms of Service and our Privacy Policy on behalf of themselves and the child.
- Takes responsibility for the security of the account credentials (email address and password). Comprehenza is not liable for any unauthorised access resulting from a failure to maintain credential security.
- Agrees to actively supervise the child's use of the App and to review the child's CQ progress and Journey history periodically.
Parents are encouraged to use a strong, unique password and to ensure the registered email address is accessible only to them, as it serves as the primary recovery mechanism for the account.
5. Acceptable Use and Prohibited Activities
Comprehenza is to be used exclusively for its intended educational purpose. The following activities are strictly prohibited and may result in immediate account termination:
- Attempting to circumvent, disable, or otherwise interfere with the Toxicity Guard or any other safety mechanism within the App.
- Using any automated script, bot, or other programmatic means to interact with the App, inflate CQ scores, or complete Journey modules artificially.
- Attempting to reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble any part of the App.
- Using the App in a manner that violates any applicable local, national, or international law or regulation.
- Attempting to access the accounts of other users or the backend infrastructure of the App.
- Inputting content into ReadBuddy that is designed to test or expose vulnerabilities in the Toxicity Guard system.
- Registering an account for a child who is not within the intended Grade 6 to Grade 9 audience.
